Queenstown CBD businesses have been in urgent need of carparking to replace the car parks removed in the street upgrades, and to ensure our growing district can easily access CBD shopping and hospitality.

Thankfully, QLDC have agreed to provide car parking on the vacant Stanley St lot, but 17 trees need to be removed.   We care about our environment and have committed to replace the trees and more.  This is why we’re launching our Tree Registry — a movement to replace the trees that make way for car parking with new, vibrant greenery that will thrive for generations to come.

All trees donated will be provided to existing community planting projects across the Queenstown district, including Queenstown. Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Arthur’s Point.

D1NZ WITH TREES THAT COUNT

My latest series of works is tilted: 'Artist Goes Wild'. It is a direct response to my desire to do something positive to help support our planet. In late 2022 I was lucky to experience the uninhabited Galápagos Islands. On the last day we were up at dawn, visiting one more beautiful island before flying to Guayaquil a city of 2.6 million, with it's smokey old cars, dirty brown river and piles of plastic rubbish. It was stark and depressing evidence of what humankind has done to the planet. Shortly afterwards we bought a 7700sqm section in Tasman, and I began to research what we could do on this small piece of land to support local wildlife and increase biodiversity. My research led me to the 'wilding' or 'naturalistic gardening' movement, and the creation of this new series of artwork.  5% of every artwork sold from this series will be donated to this page. For example on a $6000 artwork, 30 trees will be donated, and on a $500 artwork, 3 trees. There are many many ways that Dougal would encourage people to get involved in recloaking Papatūānuku, like joining us for weeding or planting at Te Raekaihau (https://www.facebook.com/groups/teraekaihau/), or getting involved in your local restoration group, or getting rid of invasive weeds in your garden, or choosing plants for your garden that are native to your corner of the country or world.

This tree registry provides another option for those that would like one. Contributing a tree to this registry will support the work that Dougal was so passionate about and even better, Trees That Count is an organisation that our group, Te Ohu o Te Raekaihau, works in partnership with to source trees.

Hi There!
My brother and I are located in Brookby, Auckland near Clevedon and have had the land milled of pine trees and are looking to provide land retirement for native planting. The goal would be to provide a generous planting on the 20ha site to reduce erosion while increasing the native plants for New Zealand. My brother and I are in the process of adding some visitor accommodations on the site in hopes to contribute to local Clevedon townships tourism and hoping that re-planting natives will also provide education and awareness to guests.

After beginning to travel her home continent with her sister, Valentina followed her instinct further - to travel and explore life outside of Europe in her mid 20s. As she worked hard and took great risk leaving close friends, family, and a career behind – to explore a little more of our incredible world and herself in 2019, she also continued to grow, expanding outward and opening up herself to more adventurous parts of life. These choices eventually led her to Aotearoa (New Zealand) where she lived and worked as the world shut down during the beginning of the pandemic. 

Valentina met Joe, her partner, under a cold snow starry sky at the base of Mount Aoraki. Her beautiful eyes and forwardness – his warmth and humor - they connected immediately, fell in love, struggled, grew and thrived. Her heart and love for trekking and living outside amongst the birds, ferns and kowhai of New Zealand came to an end when she returned home to Belgium – out of love for family and her father, who's health was in decline. 

Only a year later, our brightest Valentina passed away unexpectedly to natural causes at the end of 2022, in her home in Belgium. She is survived by her loving mother, sister, partner, godparents and close friends . Growing through the pain in our hearts to know she is no longer here in the way that we knew her to be has felt impossible. With gratitude for everything she is to us and in honor of her intangible brightness and spirit, and respect for nature, we honor her values by giving back to this earth and Aotearoa.
