Giving Back to Papatūānuku – Foundations for a Greener Future

At Off the Wall Construction, we build more than just concrete structures — we build legacies. We believe in balancing our impact on the whenua (land) by giving back to nature. That's why we've created this Tree Registry, a space where every project we complete leaves a lasting, positive mark.

For every project finished by OTWC, we will donate 5 trees to plant native trees, helping restore and protect Aotearoa’s natural beauty. And we occasionally gift a native tree to say thanks to our customers or staff.  We invite our clients, partners, and community to join us in this kaupapa (purpose) — a simple yet powerful way to create a greener future together.

Every contribution to this registry, big or small, helps to strengthen our connection with Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and supports the regeneration of native forests. Let's build a legacy that stands tall for generations to come.

OTWC's Paving the Path to Green

To celebrate my big birthday, I am aiming to get 60 trees planted this year! In addition to the trees gifted here (Thank you everyone!), there will be an additional 19 trees if I have done my maths correctly - 10 from my monthly donations, gifted 6 trees to Deb L for her birthday, and 3 I received from Kat T. Also one received from my brother Allan. So currently tally all up is 61 as at 9.6.25.

GIZZY EASTCAPE BORN AND BRED, CYCLONE GABRIEL TOOK A DEVASTATING TOLL TO TAIRAWHITI LANDSCAPE AND WILDLIFE. THE PINE TREE INDUSTRY MADE DAMAGING EFFECTS TO BOTH AS WELL. THERE IS GREYS BUSH KAITI HILL EASTWOOD HILL THAT ARE NATIVE TREE RESERVES THAT'S NOT ENOUGH CONSIDERING THE LAND SPACE OF THE EASTCAPE. MY PARTNER HAS STARTED TO CUT DOWN THE PINES AND PLANT NATIVE TREES  SHRUBS ON OUR PROPERTY THAT'S A STOPBANK AWAY FROM THE WAIPAOA RIVER, DESPITE THE GD COUNCIL PLANTING TREES ALONG THE BANK PRIOR TO GABRIEL, THE GRASS HAS ONLY JUST STARTED TO MAKE A COME BACK A YEAR ON.
SO WE BUY AND HOPE TO GET ENOUGH DONATED TREES TO PLANT TO MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE OUR COMMUNITY SO DESPERATELY NEEDS.

Moko-pāpā is the common gecko. Moko-pāpā Ltd is also the name of our company, and Moko-pāpā.nz is being established to support conservation efforts that help geckos and skinks in New Zealand thrive. At the moment, that means donating to organisations such as Pest Free Banks Peninsula, Hinewai Reserve, the Banks Peninsular Conservation Trust and the Rod Donald Trust.
One day we hope to help schools establish lizard friendly gardens and provide resources for students.

Moko-pāpā

My latest series of works is tilted: 'Artist Goes Wild'. It is a direct response to my desire to do something positive to help support our planet. In late 2022 I was lucky to experience the uninhabited Galápagos Islands. On the last day we were up at dawn, visiting one more beautiful island before flying to Guayaquil a city of 2.6 million, with it's smokey old cars, dirty brown river and piles of plastic rubbish. It was stark and depressing evidence of what humankind has done to the planet. Shortly afterwards we bought a 7700sqm section in Tasman, and I began to research what we could do on this small piece of land to support local wildlife and increase biodiversity. My research led me to the 'wilding' or 'naturalistic gardening' movement, and the creation of this new series of artwork.  5% of every artwork sold from this series will be donated to this page. For example on a $6000 artwork, 30 trees will be donated, and on a $500 artwork, 3 trees. You can also support my 'Artist Goes Wild' campaign without buying an artwork, by donating a tree yourself on this page.

There are many many ways that Dougal would encourage people to get involved in recloaking Papatūānuku, like joining us for weeding or planting at Te Raekaihau (https://www.facebook.com/groups/teraekaihau/), or getting involved in your local restoration group, or getting rid of invasive weeds in your garden, or choosing plants for your garden that are native to your corner of the country or world.

This tree registry provides another option for those that would like one. Contributing a tree to this registry will support the work that Dougal was so passionate about and even better, Trees That Count is an organisation that our group, Te Ohu o Te Raekaihau, works in partnership with to source trees.
